Which is better, NID or NIFT?

Answering this question demands on what you’re interested in. NID (National Institute of Design) is an overall design institute. It provides education in all fields of design; which are communication design, industrial design and textile and apparel design. While NIFT (National Institute of Fashion Design) is more textile and fashion oriented.

Like I mentioned above, this question is very subjective. It changes according to your preferences. Each institute offers quality education in different fields of design education. While one is more oriented towards a specific field of design, the other incorporates all of design. If you are set on what you need to do, and it’s towards fashion design, then you should go for NIFT. But, if you are interested in the other fields, or maybe you are confused about which one to go for, you can try out NID.

Now let’s take a look at the subjects each of these offers.

NID (National Institute of Design)

There are 5 NID’s that offer a bachelor’s degree. NID Ahmedabad, NID Andhra Pradesh, NID Haryana, NID Madhya Pradesh and NID Assam.

NID Ahmedabad offers sub disciplines under the major three, while the other 4 institutes offer the 3 major disciplines themselves. The three disciplines have an overall learning of the field. So you get an idea of all it has to offer without having to choose one. The three disciplines are:

 1. Communication Design

This one is all about visuals. Mostly. You do all sorts of things like graphic design, animation, film and video, character design etc.

 2. Industrial Design

Here you make cool stuff. It involves, product design, automobile design, experience, glass and ceramic design etc.

 3. Textile and Apparel Design

This is where you learn everything about the fiber to fabric journey. Fashion design, apparel design, accessory design, footwear design etc.

NIFT (National Institute of Fashion Technology)

NIFT offers 7 programs under its bachelor’s program. Which are as follows:

 1. B. Des (Fashion Design)

 2. B. Des (Leather Design)

 3. B. Des (Accessory Design)

 4. B. Des (Textile Design) 5. B. Des (Knitwear Design)

 6. B. Des (Fashion Communication)

 7. B. FTech. (Apparel Production)

That’s about it for the two institutes, so make a choice based upon what suits you most and not on the basis of what the internet says is better. Do look for reviews and opinions, but make a decision depending upon your passion.
